The Thrill of the Race
20" x 30"

There are days when the best part of the day is the race.  It gives you a sense of purpose, a feeling of rushing into your future and enjoying the wind in your hair.  There are days when the why is much less important than the living.

Standing with the Boys

It's the Weight on Her Back That Makes Her Slow
20" x 30"
125 in edition

The tortoise is thought symbolically in many cultures from China to Native America to support the universe on its back while its legs form the four pillars of the earth and lend stability to the creation.  That should be enough to slow anyone down.  In this drawing the tortoise is getting a bit of help from the Cowgirl.

Rubie Leaves Lady Luck
20" x 30"
125 in edition

The bucking bronco of early rodeo becomes the uncontrollable element of life, represented by its red upturned hooves.  The title, however, tells us that if Rubie has not left by choice she has at least made to choice to make the ride.  Even as she falls, symbols of the feminine guide Rubie on her way.  Her hat becomes the crescent moon of fruitful change and, in her wake, the stars illuminate the sky.  The shape and color of her boots tell us, too, that Rubie is sure-footed and will find her way.

Not Without Its Ups and Downs
20" x 30"
150 in edition

This piece continues the use of "The Ride" as an allegory for the living of life.  Those daily ups and downs that will come at some point in the future and define who you have become.  Viewing the bull as the masculine life force and the Cowgirl as the feminine, gives us a representation of the lifelong yin-yang dance between equal partners.  The wheat blowing in the wind will land where it may.  It will grow or it will not.  It will be found or it will not.  Its final destination is as ours, based on experiences and the winds of change.

Day Lilies
20" x 20"
150 in edition

Friendship—it enhances all of life.  Only a friend can help you see the beautiful qualities you possess.  Sharing the demands of life, as well as its joys with friends builds such loving bonds.  The dogs howling laughter reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously.  Not all great ideas are somber.  And those doggies in the windows are the guardians of the ladies, with their sharply focused senses, freely giving their advice about the real and the unreal.

Dance Romance
22" x 22"
150 in edition

A partnership is a joyous celebration of life.  The partnership, the dance, is a complicated, learned, physical rhythm, which all depends on and utilizes the balance, timing, and intuitive responses of each partner.  The guardian dog is there warning them not to lose themselves in the activity, and, encouraging them to keep time with the joy and beauty of the dance.  Behind them, a red horse, emblem of passion, nuzzles a shadowy horse half-hidden from view, perhaps indicative of the unpredictability of romance.  When we look again, we finally notice that the cowboy wears his hearts on his chaps.
